Motorized Insect Screens for Patios & Outdoor Spaces

An insect mesh closes the opening to mosquitoes and small flying insects while air still moves through it, so the patio stays usable on the evenings you actually want to be out there.

The problem

The Patio Is Comfortable and Nobody Is On It

Montgomery County Mosquito Control describes the local mosquito season as running May through October. That is six months in which the most pleasant part of the day — the hour after sunset, when the heat finally breaks — is also the worst hour to be outside.

Texas A&M AgriLife entomologists point out that mosquito pressure tracks rainfall and temperature rather than the calendar, and that different species emerge in waves through the season: floodwater mosquitoes after heavy rain, container-breeding species through the summer, and others later as standing water recedes. In practice that means the problem does not have a reliable end date.

An insect mesh does one job well: it closes the opening. It does not treat the yard, and we would not tell you otherwise.

Mesh selection

What Makes an Insect Mesh Work

Aperture

The size of the hole in the weave has to be smaller than the insect you are excluding. The US EPA publishes body-width figures for reference: roughly 0.078 in. for the Asian tiger mosquito and about 0.059 in. for biting midges, often called no-see-ums.

Airflow

A finer weave excludes more but moves less air. On a covered patio with no cross-breeze that trade matters, and it is worth deciding deliberately rather than defaulting to the finest option.

Sealing at the edges

A mesh only performs as well as its perimeter. If the fabric edge is not retained in a side track, insects come in around it and the mesh count stops mattering.

Which openings

Insects arrive from the shaded, damp side of a property far more than the hot side. That is often the opposite opening to the one that needs solar control.

Those EPA figures are insect body widths published for water-storage tank screening, not a patio screening recommendation, and we quote them only to explain why aperture matters. We do not publish exclusion percentages or mesh apertures for any specific product — those come from the manufacturer's current data, and we specify against it. The fabric and mesh guide covers the categories in more detail.

Why the edges decide it

A Gap at the Side Undoes the Whole Screen

This is the part that is easy to overlook before a quote and hard to miss afterwards. A mosquito does not need much of a gap. If the fabric edge is loose in the wind, or the track stops short of the floor, or the bottom bar does not sit down cleanly on an uneven slab, the screen will look closed and behave as though it is open.

Side retention is a property of the system, not the mesh, which is why the two get specified together. It is also why a level check on the slab is part of the site measure and not an afterthought — more on that in how motorized screens work.

Locally

Wooded, Wet and Warm Is the Worst Combination

The conditions that make outdoor living attractive here are the same ones that make insects a problem: mature tree canopy, high humidity, and enough rain to leave standing water for days.

Properties in The Woodlands and along the Spring Creek Greenway near Spring sit against large forested corridors. Lakefront and canal properties around Willis and Lake Conroe have permanent water on the doorstep. Acreage properties around Magnolia often have low ground somewhere on the lot that holds water after a storm.

None of that is a reason to panic-specify the finest mesh available on every opening. It is a reason to decide which openings the insects actually come through.

Questions

Questions About Insect Screens

Will an insect screen keep out no-see-ums?

It depends on the mesh specified. Biting midges are meaningfully smaller than mosquitoes, so a mesh chosen for mosquitoes may not exclude them. Tell us if no-see-ums are part of the problem and we will specify against the manufacturer's current mesh data rather than assuming.

Will the patio feel stuffy with the screen down?

Air moves through an insect mesh, but a tighter weave moves less of it. On a covered patio with fans and an open side this is less likely to be noticeable. On a fully enclosed space with no cross-ventilation it can be, which is a reason to screen three sides rather than four.

Can I have insect screens on some openings and solar on others?

Yes, and that is often the right answer. Solar, insect, privacy and weather protection can often be configured within a coordinated motorized screen system, with the fabric chosen per opening. Both roll out of the same style of housing, so the patio still reads as one installation.

Does an insect screen replace mosquito treatment in the yard?

No. It closes the room. If the yard itself is the problem, that is a separate service and we will say so rather than sell you a screen that will disappoint you.

What happens where the screen meets an uneven slab?

That gets checked at the measure. Slabs slope for drainage rather than sitting perfectly level, so the bottom bar and any seal detail are specified against the actual floor rather than a drawing.
